Burberry Beauty Counter Party

This was the emailer...damn misleading.

We thought that it would really be a workshop kinda thing where we really get to LEARN makeup tips and such. But really, it was simply a ploy, a marketing strategy (ill call it a scheme rather than strategy).

We arrived slightly late and wasn't surprised they started (perhaps registration was done much earlier you know). But was super duper uber surprised to see that the "learning area" was not only slightly inside of Burberry's own counter area but also taking up the space between it and the counter (I forgot the brand) opposite it, which is highly rude I think as the "customers" were really pouring over to the little makeup counters that other brand has. In short, the whole "teaching" went on in an open area, in full view of the public. Ok, let's say it's acceptable since the emailer already states that it's held at the counter, should have forseen this. BUT when I approached the staff to ask if we needed to show the receipt/voucher to anyone or do latecomers' registration, she said it's ok, just watch the demo first.

Conclusion: you don't even have to pay a cent to watch this demo. Just take note of the timing and venue, then turn up and act nonchalantly. You even get to have some light refreshments for free! =-=

I just feel cheated even if it's actually my own stupidity and naivety that made me think there was actually gonna be teaching and stuff to learn. Thing is, the group/crowd (I cannot even tell who registered and who just walked past Tangs and saw something going on then come kaypo) is too big; the ones standing behind cannot see the model properly nor the techniques used if the makeup artist has his back facing you for that period of application on the model. Thankfully, they had mikes for the artist and the emcee or else its a major fail liaoz. So what about that amount of money we paid? Well, as mentioned in the emailer, it's fully redeemable for Burberry products. So if you have paid for the registration (when there was no such thing at all and any Tom Dick Harry can come watch), it's a bit wasted if you do not redeem it for any product, cuz well erm there isn't ALOT to learn. First, you cannot see the model's face upclose. Second, the session took about 30mins? =-= when it clearly stated that it's from 6.30-8.30pm. We were shocked when it ended. The artist did a day look then just dabbed on more makeup to convert it to a night look. Would have been useful I guess, if we were more on time. But anyway, the main thing that they were trying to do was to promote Burberry products, so yea. And then at the end of the session all of us just gather around the counter and start looking through the products to redeem. Obviously, they all cost more than $30 haha heng we signed up as a pair so only spent $25 for the "registration" but in the end redeeming stuff made us spend more than $30 anyway. Smart lor, when you are using that voucher to redeem, you feel and think that you are paying lesser for a branded good and feel happy. When in reality, you were the one who bought the voucher with the same amount of money in the first place. So you are not really on the winning end. Burberry takes all.

Oh the good thing was that we could ask the makeup artist and other staff questions about the colours and application techniques both during and after the session. And they were nice and patient enough although you know when they approach you to ask if you need help that it's a sign they want you to quickly make your choice and redeem or get out of here. Cuz you have already conveniently handed money to them, now is just a matter of whether you would want to spend more or not. More is like not much, unless you intend to buy $100 worth. And that's about it for anything remotely positive about this "party" =-= the service eh, because the crowd was quite overwhelming I guess it isn't fair to judge the speed at which they help to pass out the door gifts and lipsticks given that I keep hearing the staff directing customers to this one lady.

Pictures!

This is what I bought - Midnight Plum Eyeliner ($33)
Their little door gift (think some didn't know and never collect, or like wait too long for the staff to attend to you amidst the crowd). This was also the gift given to those who answered the qns set by the emcee correctly.
Besides the lipstick, the rest are from the gift pack

The $43 worth lipstick that is given to those who registered early.
Quite cool. There's the classic Burberry design carved on the lipstick and it has the same magnetic cover described/promoted to us during the demo session.
The magnetic cover ensures that the lipstick isn't uncovered in your bag and leave red marks inside. But eh your lipstick wouldn't really stick out of its original tube right? I mean some do a bit, but after using for a while, it shortens and the problem wouldn't exist?

After seeing this advert inside the gift, I realise that ours was no workshop. Hopefully these do really teach you more stuff, although I think it is a must to be using their products to teach you.

Random add-on: T-ara is getting into a huge mess...and I have no idea who to believe T.T they should totally use lie detectors and truth serums in these kinda high profile cases, be it important or not. Because it eases the rumor mill and people's feelings. But then again, as human beings, we cannot help but want to torture ourselves =-=

Harry Potter™: The Exhibition

Chose to go during a weekday morning/slightly past noon last week to beat the crowds. But ended up sidetracking and watching the filming process of Poetic Justice. So went in the afternoon. Crowd was still ok, there were some secondary school kids coming in when we were almost done with the exhibition.

The exhibition!
The exhibition is on from 2 June to 30 September 2012 at the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. Singaporeans get a cheaper price for this haha $20 compared to foreigners' $24, so must remember to show your pink IC. The website says its timed entry and that admission time is strictly observed. We misunderstood and thought that it meant that we can only spend a limited amount of time inside. But nope, it meant that the ticket is valid for entry for a period of time (1 hour intervals, e.g. 2-2:59pm) and then we can spend any amount of time we want inside. But honestly, we spent slightly less than 1.5 hours only, and we were already really taking our time.

We are not allowed to take pictures inside the exhibition, so the photos are limited =(
Just on the other side of the life exit is the entrance to the exhibition and they sell some special  "guidebook" that has all the pictures of exhibits found inside. And that's why we cannot take any peektures...and the book costs $60 if I remember correctly. Eeks.

$60 exhibition guide book
Just beside the table/counter where there were salesgirls sitting trying to sell you the book, there is this Ford Anglia hanging above.

getting nearer to the real entrance where you can no longer take pictures after you pass it
Just slightly beyond this point, there is a photo-taking place where they simply wrap Hogwarts scarves around you and then give you a ticket that you can use to view and buy your photos as a souvenir at the end. We didn't even bother to go view the photo XD

ticket and "voucher" to buy photo taken at the start
Warning not to take pictures. After we do get in, we are warned again by the lady minding the Sorting Hat that any offenders will be put through detention with Umbridge. I wonder why we will not be sent straight to Azkaban hahaha
We were kept in a space where they hung all the posters from all the movies until we had a sizable number to form a group to go through the Sorting Hat section. Between this space and the land beyond where no cameras or camcorders were allowed, there's this cool mist with light shining on it to form a sort of veil that is sorta see-through.

See the little yellow noticeboard? Beside it is the REAL entrance and the Sorting Hat section is first.

The lady would ask for volunteers so do raise your hand and volunteer, cuz only two are chosen. She isn't going to feed you to the Death-eaters or anything. But people are generally wary when asked to volunteer HAHA.

Anyway, she would first ask the volunteer if they have a house of their choice. I volunteered and chose Slytherin just to try and people were O.o cmon what's the big deal. Slytherin isn't all evil. The lady was also taken aback (or pretended to) and made comments that yes, I do look cunning and shrewd (nicer forms of sly and evil I guess, but in line with what Slytherin house stands for) and pressed some button inside the hat so that the Hat said almost the same stuff as her: "Hmm, interesting...cunning..and shrewd! Your house is Slytherin!" something along that line.

If, however, you do not choose a house, like the volunteer after me, the lady simply chooses one for you, and I think that usually means any of the houses except for Slytherin. Similarly, she mentions about how you look and she can totally take over Professor Trelawney cuz I think she gets it right like a thousand times liaoz, 100% accuracy XD cuz she controls the buttons inside the Hat.

I think for hygiene purposes, they do not put the Hat fully down onto your head, which is good haha but might be disappointing for young kids (although I am not sure if she will do the same for little kids since the volunteers for our slot were not that young). Oh, and the Hat doesn't really mutter, it's a Dolby Surround sound system haha if the Hat really moved, I would be WOW. And feel creeped out at the same time when it is above my head.

Since there are no pictures from the exhibition, I can only paste the promo video to help remind myself =-=

Well, erm basically everything interactive is already inside the video =-= There is the mandrake pulling that is pretty lame, in the "Hogwarts classes" section, then there's the quaffle throwing (very similar to the arcade basketball) in the "Quidditch" section and that's it. I don't really consider the mechatronic magical creatures or shaking cabinets "interactive"...

found in "The Exhibition" tab in website
This can be found on the website itself and yeah, the exhibition has 9 sections in total, starting from the "Hogwarts' arrival" to "Great Hall". So the main question, is the Harry Potter exhibition worth it? Erm well, if you read the description on the website, as well as see the 9 photos on this page (http://www.artsciencemuseum.com.sg/harrypotter/gallery.php), they pretty much cover the things you should expect and you can imagine what else they have.

But of course, the exhibition definitely has more than this. And it is more interesting to see the artefacts up close, rather than through pictures. But sadly, we could not touch or feel them, understandable though. I liked the entire feel I got from walking through all the stuff I have seen in the movies. There is some background music that they do put on in each of the sections, although I didn't really pay attention to the music. The quaffle throwing was pretty ok, but it was sort of dangerous because when you don't even use a lot of force, it rebounds like woah, and if it bounces a bit higher than the short barrier in front of you, it can hit you in the chest or stomach or if you are really short or the ball rebounds with such force..., your FACE. There should have been someone standing there supervising and all, cuz there are bound to be kids in the afternoon, coming after school or maybe simply not Singaporeans and thus on holiday when school here has obviously started.

To make it more worth the money, I guess you could really spend longer in there and scrutinise the artefacts cuz they are really quite detailed. For example, take note of Umbridge's decrees that were plastered all over the wall before we officially enter the "Great Hall" which was the last section/room of the exhibition. I found that the decrees (as were all other artefacts containing text) was detailed and well thought of, but the last sentence that was in the smallest font size was simply "Blah bla bla blah Blah bla". Something like that, you get the idea. Serious. Was WTH-ing and LMAO-ing. Was disappointed with the Weasley twins' Puking Pastilles and all the other treats though...not detailed and looks disgusting. Also, some of the clothings looked dubious, as in the size and the height of the person for which it was prepared for, didn't seem to fit, so we were wondering if these were the originals.

Then the gift shop OMG. Really expensive = no souvenirs T.T

The only thing we were really "ahhh we want...very beautiful" was the $40 pens. Ravenclaw's was the most beautiful imo. But it's really not worth it, it's those ballpoint pens, whereby you can replace with another pen's ink thingy after the original runs out. It is really only the design that is nice. The pen is heavy, hard to use in daily school life too, and I guess weird too haha cuz it's not the small classy designs that usual expensive pens (ballpoint or ink), the design is "bulky" and very obvious haha but it might not strike others immediately as a Hogwarts-related object at first glance unless you own all four pens and lay them all out? =-=

The Hogwarts scarves (same ones used in the photo booth) were all pretty normal, there's no big HOGWARTS or GRYFFINDOR words across it so even if you use it, people cannot really tell. Plus we are in Singapore. When the hell to use sia? These cost $40 if I remember correctly, totally not worth either =( Same goes for the ties, they look pretty much normal and thus not worth the price - $27 I think. There were other stuff like mugs that says "Muggle", bookmarks, soft toys etc, the more standard souvenir type of things.

And then there were WANDS. Of different wizards. There's a set of 5 or 6 super ex, Harry's plus other major characters'. Bellatrix's was a separate item altogether and it's nice, very ergonomic hahaha cuz it's bent and you can totally act evil trying to cast the killing curse with a eagle's talon pose, but ex too, and pretty useless though people can obviously tell you are holding a wand. Talking about wands, the professors' wands are very nice! The wands' detailed carvings cannot be seen clearly in the movies, so it's definitely one of the things to look out for in the exhibition. I remember a smaller scale exhibition of the wands and clothes (totally free exhibition) in Iluma last year I think, they were further from the display glass and the display glass was so reflective it was hard to take pictures too. And not all the wands were shown.

Other notable stuff that differentiates from the usual souvenirs were (as much as I can remember):
- broomsticks (short, more for children)
- necklaces (HP themed like Hermione's Timeturner etc but doesn't look like they are of high quality)
- Bertie Botts every flavour beans (actually it's very normal jelly beans and they cost $6, cheapest there but totally not worth it cuz it's small, and the packaging isn't like the bigger and nicer one we saw in the exhibition and movies, it was a ricola lozenges kinda box)
-  Chocolate frogs (with collectible cards just like in the movies but packaged differently from what I remember in the movie - in the movie it was a pentagon shaped hard cover box)
- feather quill and ink bottle (not sure if really can use or not though O.o)
- books (they had the full HP collection, also some behind the scenes movie production books with more pictures and anecdotes etc, they cost a bomb each, like one was $120, another $100 *faints* I flipped to a page that shared a story of how Emma Watsons' pet hamster died a few days into filming of Chamber I think, then the crew knew how much she adored it and made it a hamster-sized coffin, with velvet lining, like OMG, that hamster has a good life even when it is dead.

Super long post and took a super long time and it's super past my bedtime, gonna die trying to wake up in time tmr zzz

Chance Encounter: 微笑正仪

Went Harry Potter™: The Exhibition few days back and saw some Mediacorp filming!

Saw the filming of a scene for Poetic Justice 微笑正仪 with Dai Yang Tian 戴阳天 and Desmond Tan 陈泂江 in it.
Very simple scene - boy knocks into a lady, grandpa helps to say sorry on his behalf, lady totally outraged and start yelling then even pushing the grandpa, then the two young men appear to help, then lady raises hand to slap DYT but ends up slapping DT.
AND IT TOOK A FRIGGING HOUR. Actually even more, because when we noticed them, they were in the midst of filming, not setting the equipment up and stuff. Now I can fully appreciate the work all these crew go through just for a scene. They had to keep changing angles from which they film so as to give different POVs when the full thing comes out. And this is not even considering NGs made due to the director's dissatisfaction with the work the actors and actresses present. Hats off man. Like this is not even considering the fact that they would have to end up going back to the studio and edit and all that.

That day was a real eye-opener. To a different kinda world, a world that we have only viewed from our television sets. I wish I could have the chance to really get such a close up view of the workings of different kinds of job, just to decide what I wanna do with my life cuz I got no idea T.T I mean the stuff I am interested in, is either impossible or most probably will become boring soon enough and I will become disinterested. That would totally suck.

Pictures!

A small crowd forming...that soon dispersed for lunch haha

unglam shot! XD
crewman stuck babysitting curious little onlookers so they don't get into the scene

this is what they use as a "barricade" from the shooting
the little girls whose heads are visible are just onlookers - that's how close they got O.o

SHINE youth festival and Panasonic workshop

Update on the SHINE festival opening where we got to see JAYESSLEE upclose and really 听出耳油!
The concert was a plus and we were actually attending a workshop conducted by Cheng Ding An (director of "Kallang Roar" and "Ghost on Air"). I think he was supposed to give us a run-through of how we can use the features on our camcorders etc but it was more of a sharing session - of his experiences and whatnot. Not that I'm complaining cuz in the first place I was already wondering how the hell can one teach noobs how to film at great angles etc, plus we were supposed to film the "Cosmo Parade". Like seriously huh? O.o as in how to film a parade FANTASTICALLY? And I guess the camcorder is pretty user-friendly too. I do own one but its pretty old and it has been years since I touched it but I guess its still pretty similar and thus manageable. The one we were lent is the Panasonic HC-X900.

Apparently, it can view the videos you have taken in both 2D and 3D. As in, there is no switch or button or whatever to toggle between filming in 2D or 3D. I discovered accidentally while playing with all the different functions that whatever videos you have taken before, you could choose to view in 3D, but I don't think it will show when you extract the video from the SD card, like it wouldn't be saved as a 3D video bah...

Perhaps there were other newer features and all the scenes and modes but honestly if it boils down the actual filming like for a movie and such, I think (guess?) the raw clip should be left untouched while the editors and director would sit down one day and do the editing, cutting and any CGI required. I remember a similar workshop last year also organised by omy.sg and Panasonic, but for cameras (maybe post a post that is late by one year, like soon?). The speaker actually tried teaching us various functions, modes etc and even had notes on apertures, shutter speed which I roughly know from my brief encounter with photog club few years back. But its all theory, and when it comes to hands-on I get pwned...like was totally sweating and not knowing what to do. I think it would have been better if I had stopped attempting to fiddle with my camera modes and focused on making my photos tell stories, cuz most turned out lifeless, like a normal photo. During that workshop last year, we were supposed to take pictures of cosplayers and anything going on around *SCAPE - some dragon dance or 舞龙 iirc and also flea market stalls.

Anyway, back to the workshop, I liked his anecdotes! Stories, more stories please haha but then again, he was already taking too much time and ended up not being able to share about the product and he already had slides prepared. And he was constantly prompted by the staff at the back regarding his time limit. I think he is really humble and from what he said, it's the friends he has made in the industry like Dennis Zhou 周崇庆 or better known as Auntie Lucy, that have taught him many valuable lessons and kept him grounded.

I really cannot remember much of the stuff he shared since it's been almost a month and my brain capacity has deteriorated much over the last few years as I keep telling all my friends. But I do remember him saying that cuz you need the capital for the film, you need the producer, and he said that some producers are really not that interested in your film/project, and you as the director end up doing saikang stuff for him. I shall presume that it isn't supposed to be kept secret since he revealed it at a workshop. He said that he had met those that had him acting like a "pimp", ferrying models around as and when the producer feels like hanging out with them and all that. Shitty world.

Now, down to the parade that we were supposed to film. I think I gave the omy people pretty useless footage =-= as in I tried to make it as artistic as possible by zooming into the SHINE flag and then onto the crowd but without any editing, all my clips look bleh, like normal? Basically what every other person in that workshop could have conjured too. Took a few pictures with the camcorder as well.

There were these "ahmas" promoting lifelong learning. Some kids walked past and commented to their parents "why they so old one?" and I caught the "ahmas"/girls giggling while the parents tried explaining they were just playing dress-up HAHA
The Dark Knight was walking coolly down the street with some "bodyguard" behind him then I (very luckily) managed to catch this shot of him turning around and just-nice-posing (still coolly).
And these two photos depict the chaos the duno how many metres long, perhaps even record-breaking dragon created. Ok maybe not chaos, but inconvenience. I was there I think for the whole of its crossing. I basically filmed the whole thing down and it took a good 10-20 minutes to get it across this stretch of road near Ngee Ann City. And even Spiderman himself had to act as road marshall! Haha! Can see from the first picture that some students actually had the brains to think of trying to lift the cloth up high enough to let cars cross but the later bunch had problems and I overheard one commenting if they could try lifting it up. Was so tempted to tell them "yea the students before you succeeded" but kept mum and continuing filming (I have totally no idea why I filmed the whole thing =-=).

Drag queens! Promoting the musical La Cage Aux Folles (http://entertainment.xin.msn.com/en/celebrity/buzz/asia/ivan-heng-enjoys-dressing-in-drag)~ I have a "pic" where I managed to get one of them to blow a fly-kiss at me but I was actually video-ing and only realised much later on =-=

uber cute mascot! =D

Professional little didi that stopped and posed for me haha although I was obvsly holding a camcorder, eh haha I would have thought it weird to take a pic with a camcorder hahahah
Act cute mojo jojo
Everyone wanna take photo with army guys with guns haha

Way past my bedtime, but screw my body clock man, it's been screwed long ago anyway...아름다운 밤이야~ 근데 잠이 안 와, 어떡해???
